16 June 2013 - Advent Park, Maida Vale, Perth, Western Australia

This morning Chris vented our battery system, something that should have been done in the manufacture of the caravan. The job took some time and was accomplished with care and skill, while I stayed right away, as is best when a home handyman is struggling to find his way cleanly through the exterior of a well finished craft.

It was so very cold that even by 11.30 am my feet and hands were still like blocks of ice, so I set out for a very brisk walk down to the supermarket at High Wickham, power walking in a manner my husband hates, but then he was not there. I was back in three quarters of an hour bearing a loaf of bread, sold as pane di casa and all the more delicious for the exotic Italian name.

After lunch we headed out to the suburb of Aveley, twenty minutes north on the west side of the Swan River, which we had passed through the other day returning from Joondalup. The suburb was established in 2008 and the subdivision inventively named The Vale has over a dozen show homes for public view. We spent over two hours trawling through these lovely new homes, relatively modest homes within the budget of the average Perth homebuyer. We were fascinated to compare and note the odd facets of Australian home construction; home theatres, activity rooms, sculleries to cater for modern trends, no skirtings, no interior decorating, one light bulb and one two point power outlet per room  included in the price and all constructed on sand, on which most of Perth is built. Australian homes do have wonderful al fresco areas but that is about all I consider superior to new homes we have looked at in New Zealand. These in The Vale are jammed onto sections of just 450 square metres; you could reach out the kitchen window and greet your neighbour with a handshake. One does feel rather a fraud engaging in conversation with the sales agents, especially when they proffer packages of plans, information and business cards to one who has no intention of following through. This is simply one of our rather bizarre tourist activities.

We both agreed it had been a most interesting afternoon and retired happily to our tiny home on wheels to pass the evening, perhaps the last Sunday in Perth.

Googling details of Perth’s weather conditions today threw up the fact that it was only 2.6 degrees this morning. Is it any wonder I was cold!?
