1 June 2013 - Advent Park, Maida Vale, Perth, Western Australia

We find ourselves surrounded in the masses that have converged on the camp in their hundreds to celebrate their Jesus; this is the annual Glory Camp.

Out of curiosity I googled the event and found that these people have paid dearly for their very basic accommodation, catering and entertainment while they are here to be with like-minded folk. They will no doubt be hit up for further contributions before the weekend is out. Such is the way of the religious world, or in fairness, simply the way of the world.

The gathering last night might well have been mistaken for a normal secular party; loud live music in the large tin shed normally labelled “Youth”, currently advertising their hero. The party was no problem to us regular campers and quietened down by ten, as one would expect in a camping situation. This morning a wander to the rubbish skip before 10 am revealed a joyous crowd shaking and rolling to the wild lament of gospel music; they were having a good time for sure. The many children that have been dragged along for the weekend seem to be happy to play in the expanse of the park, although I did note one very bored boy, kicking trees and throwing sticks at imaginary enemies. He evidently does not share his parents’ enthusiasm for such events.

Instead we tackled some administration matters that have trickled through by email over the past few days, driving through to Midland to have some printing done, and agonising over documents after lunch. A drive or walk in the sunshine would have been so much more pleasant. Chris is no better or worse today, but will surely feel better with a change of scenery. We will make sure we get out tomorrow.
