31 March 2012 - San Remo Holiday Park, Victoria

We left our delightful Mornington camp this morning and travelled up and across the top of Western Port, across the drained swamp lands at the head of the harbour, pausing at Koo-Wee-Rup where we purchased a loaf of excellent sour dough bread for lunch. We should have returned immediately to the South Gippsland Highway, however we inadvertently took a rather scenic route east and round about through lovely rural land before finding the main highway. It is a rare day indeed that the Chief Navigator gets it wrong, but there you are. I admit that it was entirely my fault.

There was quite a lot of traffic on the road, and even when we turned south on to the Bass Highway, there was little let up. Perhaps there are folk who are starting extra early for Easter; we used to do that every year, especially when Olly was still at school. We pulled off the road just a couple of kilometres north of San Remo and had lunch, before coming on into this lovely little seaside settlement and setting up camp.

We had chosen this particular camping ground because it was in our Family Parks bible, although on arrival we could see no evidence of the appropriate branding. The proprietors pulled out of the franchise mid-year after the book was published however were generous enough to offer the 10% discount to us anyway. This and the fact that the camp is well appointed with spacious sites, is enough to highly recommend it to others.

Once set up, we wandered down through the township, on to the jetty from which one has a good view of the arched bridge across to Phillip Island. There were children diving off the jetty into the swiftly flowing tide which gave me the jimjams. Had they missed the rope strung across between a fishing boat and one pier, there was little we could have done to save them.
