1 May 2012 - Exhibition Park Camping Ground, Canberra, ACT

I have no idea what the temperature was this morning but I am jolly sure it was colder last night, than the preceding ones. But again the day was clear and Canberra was at its best. We set off once more to the Art Gallery and joined the free tour of Australian Art at 10.30 am. As usual this was most enlightening, even though we had seen much of the work during the two previous viewing days. Listening to an “expert” does not necessarily change one’s opinion, but it does give a wider view of the art and the artist.

It was lunch time when we completed the tour, so we had lunch, then spent an hour wandering about the gardens and open areas along the lake frontage as far as the State Library and Reconciliation Square, pausing to read the memorials and admire the artworks all through this area.

Returning to the gallery, we joined yet another tour, this time of the Collection Highlights with a different guide. This too was excellent and caused me to feel a little more sympathetic toward the Surrealism Gallery, and offered more understanding about the aboriginal art on display.

After all this art education, we felt that we had seen as much of the National Gallery of Australia as any reasonable person could, and so headed toward camp, detouring to the Woolworths in the suburb of Dickson to pick up a rotisserie chook for dinner.

Back at camp we watched the sun go down; quite the loveliest sunset we have watched for some time. Who would guess that the forecast for tomorrow is for rain?
