Rain, rain and still more rain; the puddles are joining to form shallow lakes about the camp however are still manageable, unlike the roads to the north of us that are closed due to flooding. We count ourselves lucky for sure.
Patches of blue through the venetians this morning suggested there might be a break in the weather, however the reprieve was short lived. We ventured out mid-morning to Caroline Springs and wandered about the modest shopping centre, spending money on pyjamas and other necessities as one does on such aimless outings. Back in the landcruiser we drove in further aimless circles unsuccessfully searching for open homes to amuse us, and finally returned to camp to toast our sandwiches I had packed with optimism.
A telephoned invitation from Chris’s second wife came over lunch and gave shape to the plans of our day. We drove through the worsening rain along the highways and freeways, across to Spotswood to spend a pleasant couple of hours over coffee and cake with Lyn and her husband, catching up with the progress of children now all grown to adulthood with children of their own.
On our return, we received yet another telephoned invitation out to dinner next Tuesday. For us unsociable gypsies, this abundance of social engagements is all rather overwhelming.
